As a stylist I cannot recall ever telling anyone, “don’t worry, it will grow back!” But this past weekend I found myself saying it several times and it felt really good! This is because I had the wonderful opportunity to shave heads for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.
The event raised over $10 thousand to help children with cancer. We had men, women and children shaving their heads without batting an eye. The hero of the day was a young boy named Bryce. Bryce is 10 years old and has leukemia. Meeting him was a wonderful experience I will remember for the rest of my life! After losing all his hair in treatment, he had a bit of hair growing and asked me would it be ok if I shaved his head too. This brought a tear to my eye. Bryce wanted to thank all the “ladies” that lost their hair for him by getting rid of what he had growing back. How was it he said? Why do they want to be bald there girls. I just had to smile. Then I thought this would be a good time to present the gift basket I and the event coordinator put together for Bryce.
DS Parada donated a remote control helicopter and a $50 Visa gift card to the basket. We also donated a color consult, haircut with a Pureology gift basket for silent auction. All in all, it was a fun day filled with both laughter and tears. It was truly my honor to have been a part of such a great cause. St. Baldrick’s is always looking for more dontations, please feel free to check it out here. I also invite you to check out the pictures from the event on DS Parada’s Facebook.
Have you ever participated in St.Baldrick’s? What was the best part of your experience?
